Ultimate Sacrifice By S.E. Green

This review is spoiler free.

I gave this book 3.5/5 stars. Ultimate Sacrifice by S. E Green is a standalone young adult horror/mystery novel.

Synopsis

This book follows Vickie, who is entangled within a murder mystery and realizes everything is not as it seems. Vickie has always had an ordinary life in a small town. Yet one fateful night a child ends up dead in the woods behind her house. Vickie and her family are suddenly thrown into a national spotlight. As the investigation unfolds, she begins to realize her family isn’t so ordinary after all. Evil is inching closer to those she holds dear and Vickie isn’t sure who she can ultimately trust.

General Thoughts

The book opens on the night of the child’s murder, and you are immediately thrust into all the action. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat, and makes it so hard to put down. It was full of suspense and easy to read fast because of the story’s length. Even though it has a pretty simple writing style, I felt like it worked well for the story. The novel has heavy themes and if the writing style would have been more intricate, the themes might not have been portrayed the same way.

Characters and Length

I thought the characters were very realistic and made many practical decisions. The main character Vickie, though some of her choices I did not agree with, was definitely my favorite character. Since the book was so short, the characters had minimal development and made some out of the blue decisions. Furthermore, some aspects of the story were a lot more rushed than others which then led to these choices.

This book solely followed Vickie’s perspective and I think if the author added the perspective of one of her brothers or even the murderer (not giving away their identity though) it would have added a lot to the mystery.

The Ending

Though parts of the ending felt a little rushed, I was shocked! My jaw was hanging open at what occurred. The ending really took me aback because I never expected what happened. It was a major plot twist that is very hard to predict. (At least for me). I felt like the ending tied up the book, but still left many questions unanswered.

Final Thoughts

Ultimate Sacrifice was a undoubtedly a great story filled with tons of mystery. This is a very fast paced and easy read perfect for Halloween. Despite its flaws, I still enjoyed the story and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, creepy read.
