The Martian by Andy Weir

I finished this book in January and I decided to finally write a review about it now.  This is a spoiler free review.

I am giving this book a 4.5/5 stars. I really enjoyed it and thought it was an amazing idea.

This book is about an astronaut named Mark Watney who is on  a mission to Mars.

On the mission a storm approaches and the crew has to leave early. Mark is struck by a satellite while trying to leave Mars with his crew mates. After being unable to find him and thinking he is dead the rest of the crew must leave Mars and head back to earth. Mark turns out to be alive and stranded on Mars.

Now NASA has to find a way to keep him alive long enough until they can get someone to save him. Mark on the other hand, has to find a way to communicate with NASA to let them know that he is alive and needs help.

This book was written as if it was Mark’s journal and written on different Sols (Days on Mars) . I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. The only thing I didn’t really like was that it skipped from Sol 211 to 376. I understand that Weir had to skip a bunch of Sols so the book would not go on forever, however, I would have preferred if there was just a bit of a larger gap between Sols and not one almost every day to make the other gap shorter. For example instead of writing on both Sol 198 and 199 it could have been Sol 198 and 202.

Other than that I am very pleased with the book.

I really loved all of the characters and thought they were very funny. The crew all had a great friendship with each other and I loved that. I thought the scientific aspects were very well portrayed, even if I did not always understand them.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-fi.
